Snowmobiling in Queenstown

Adventure Queenstown Snowmobiles

Have you got a wish-list of things you want to do? Snowmobiling in Queenstown is definitely a candidate to be at the top of your adventure bucket list.

Known as your ‘bucket list’ it has become popular since the movie of the same name, staring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, released in 2007.

Adventure in the Snow

First up, it involves helicopters:  Taking a helicopter flight past the 2 319 metre high The Remarkables mountain range and then beyond sees you nestle on snow-capped the Garvie Plateau.

Secondly, the trip involves snowmobiles which themselves are associated with Canada. At last count there were 700 000 registered snowmobiles in Canada.

Snowmobiles Easy to Ride

Back in New Zealand, the six snowmobiles are amazingly easy to operate.   It is all about technique, not strength, as you manoeuvre the super-stable machine around on the snow.  There is no need to have ridden motor bikes or jet skis before.  You don’t even need a car driver’s licence!  All tuition is given on arrival by competent guides who ensure everyone is comfortable with the machines.  Then the adventure is on as you zoom along the undulating snowy field.

Amazing Scenery

The undulating Garvie Plateau is just perfect for snowmobiling.  The environment is truly pristine and has a total wilderness feel about it (no cappuccinos available on this mountain!)  There is no one else around; just you and your mobiling buddies on your very own wilderness adventure in one of New Zealand’s most pristine environments.

There are plenty of opportunities to stop, admire the scenery and take photos.  There are quite literally 360 degree views of snowy-capped mountains – on a clear day you may even be able to see Aoraki Mount Cook!

Duration

All up the round trip is about 2 ½ hours, which isn’t long when you’ve got a long bucket list to tick off.  This includes a scenic helicopter flight there and back with around 1 ½ hours zooming around on your snowmobile.

Of course snowmobiling is a winter activity running from late June until early October.
